The Indian technology outsourcing giant Infosys says it has agreed to pay a $34 million fine to resolve a major visa fraud and immigration abuse case in Texas.
Infosys has been under federal investigation for using short-term B-1 visas to bring thousands of workers to the United States instead of the more expensive, long-term H1-B visa. An Infosys consultant flagged what he said was an illegal practice and later filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the company, which was dismissed.
Infosys said Wednesday in a statement that it denies "any claims of systemic visa fraud," but hailed the settlement and said it had already taken a reserve to pay it.
Prosecutors have scheduled a Wednesday morning press conference outside Dallas to discuss the settlement.
