One of the nation's largest school districts has reached an agreement with the NAACP and law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of students being charged with crimes for minor offenses.
Broward County Public Schools in South Florida will announce the agreement Tuesday. It charges principals and administrators rather than school resource officers with being the primary decision makers in responding to student misbehavior.
The move is designed to cut down on what has become known as the "school-to-prison pipeline," where students accused of minor offenses such as disrupting class and loitering are arrested and charged with crimes.
Broward is the nation's seventh-largest school district and has had a high number of school-related arrests. The NAACP hopes the agreement will serve as a model for other districts nationwide.
