Police in Illinois have launched a criminal investigation into the death of a toddler living in a home that was visited by the Department of Children and Family Services the day she disappeared.
MISSING ILLINOIS GIRL, 1, FOUND DEAD IN ‘SQUATTER’ HOME
Semaj Crosby was found dead last month in a Joliet Township home, reportedly under a couch, after a 33-hour manhunt.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office, which first described the death as suspicious but not necessarily a homicide, now are calling it an “ongoing criminal investigation,” the Chicago Sun- Times reported.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services officials visited the home the day the girl disappeared to investigate an allegation of neglect by the victim’s mother.
The agency officials said they saw all three of the mother’s children, including Semaj, and observed no obvious hazards or safety concerns. The home was in deplorable condition and as many as 15 people, including squatters, were living there, police said.
Between February 2016 and April 2017, deputies visited the home 59 times, most of which were probation checks, the Sun-Times reported.
The Will County Land Use Department released photos of the house and deemed the home uninhabitable, Fox 32 reported.
An autopsy was performed and ruled inconclusive. There were no obvious signs of distress – and no one is in custody, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.
