Officials in suburban Chicago have rejected a plan to build an immigrant detention center in the village of Crete.
Crete President Michael Einhorn says village trustees voted unanimous Monday night to block the project.
Plans for the detention center had led to protests by Crete residents and immigrant rights activists.
Immigration officials, however, promoted the center as a more humane place to hold low-risk detainees. And village officials initially touted the center as a way to create jobs.
Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement picked Crete last year as a potential site for the facility. The plan was to hire a private company called Corrections Corporation of America to build and operate a medium-security facility to house more than 700 immigrants awaiting deportation.
