A hearing on a speedy trial request by a former South Carolina police officer charged with killing an unarmed black motorist is set for next week.
WCSC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1kvPUF0) that a hearing on the request from attorneys for Michael Slager is scheduled for Monday.
The former North Charleston officer is shown on cellphone video firing eight times as 50-year-old Walter Scott runs from a traffic stop. His attorneys say they could be ready in spring.
But prosecutor Scarlett Wilson has told Circuit Judge Clifton Newman the trial should be held in November at the earliest.
Wilson also is trying the case of Dylann Roof in the deadly Charleston church shootings. She says a state Supreme Court order protects her from trying other cases before that one, which is scheduled for July.
