The American Medical Association -- the nation's largest physician organization with nearly 250,000 members -- initially opposed the president's plan, but backed the House Democrats' version of the bill in July. The senior advocacy group AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for people over age 50 and a powerful lobbying group in the U.S., hosted President Obama at a July 28 tele-conference town hall event in Washington. While AARP officials claim they have not endorsed any specific legislative measure, they say there are certain provisions within the health care reform bill that the organization has backed -- an admission that prompted some AARP members to tear up their membership cards and send heated letters to the organization's CEO.![Catholic Health Association]()
The Catholic Health Association, in collaboration with other hospital groups, announced in July that it reached an agreement with the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, Sen. Max Baucus, and the White House on $155 billion in contributions to finance a health care overhaul. Service Employees International Union (SEIU), a labor union representing over 2 million workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, is calling on constituents to support swift passage of President Obama's health care reform bill. "The first step we need to take to fix our broken healthcare system and get us on the path toward healthcare equality is to tell Congress to pass President Obama's health care plan," reads a statement on the SEIU Web site.
