WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. government is being cautious with its message as a device in the Gulf of Mexico captures oil spewing from the sea floor.
Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen is the federal government's point man for the response to the spill. He said on "Fox News Sunday" that he doesn't "want to create any undue encouragement."
He says "we need to underpromise and overdeliver" as the government works to stem the flow of oil.
A BP rig exploded nearly seven weeks ago and killed 11 workers. It also ruptured a wellhead a mile below the surface of the Gulf, creating what has become the nation's largest oil spill.
A containment device began capturing some of the oil late last week and is slowly siphoning off the flow.
