There will be plenty of bookworms buzzing around D.C. when competition begins Tuesday at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
But there will be number nerds as well.
One of the spellers can recite pi up to the 131st digit. Another has already completed the math curriculum at Florida Atlantic University.
For those youngsters, spelling and math go hand-in-hand.
Fourteen-year-old Brian Reinhart from Florida said spelling is all about using roots to find patterns — the same way formulas are used to solve problems in math.
The competition concludes Thursday.
