A former teacher and principal has been selected as the next leader of New York City's public schools.
Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio announced Monday that he has chosen Carmen Farina (fah-REE'-nah) as chancellor of the nation's largest school system.
Farina is a longtime ally of de Blasio, a Democrat. She helped inform his promises to offer universal pre-kindergarten classes and expand after-school programs for middle schoolers.
Farina is 70. She has been a New York City teacher, principal, superintendent and deputy chancellor.
Farina says she is looking forward to a mayor with a "progressive agenda."
