A former northwest Louisiana prosecutor says he began having nagging doubts many years ago about the fairness of the trial in a death penalty case he successfully handled in 1984.
It was the case against Glenn Ford, who spent three decades on death row for a Shreveport murder before he was exonerated and released from prison earlier this month.
Former prosecutor A.M. Stroud III drew national attention over the weekend with an anguished, open letter of apology published in The Times of Shreveport.
Stroud said Tuesday he's overwhelmed by the resulting media attention. He now firmly opposes capital punishment, in part, because cases like Ford's prove it cannot be administered fairly — or with a guarantee that people won't be executed for crimes they didn't commit.
