The family of a slain 28-year-old soldier says the pain of her death is worse because she was killed in her barracks at a Colorado infantry post.

A court-martial starts Monday in the death of Army Spc. Brandy Fonteneaux (fon-tah-NO) of Houston. She was found dead in her room at Fort Carson in January.

Sgt. Vincinte (vin-SIN-tay) Jackson is charged with murder and premeditated murder in Fonteneaux's death. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

His attorneys have declined to comment.

Fonteneaux's family says she knew Jackson but they weren't close. Army officials haven't publicly discussed a motive.

Jackson is an Army combat engineer from Rancho Cucamonga (koo-kuh-MUNG-guh), Calif. He has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and received the Purple Heart.
