Family refuses to claim body of accused murderer and kidnapper

The body of Adam Mayes, the man who killed a woman and one of her three daughters before kidnapping the other two sisters in Tennessee, has still not been claimed by his family -- almost a month after he shot himself as authorities closed in.
Alexandria Bain, 12, and Kyliyah Bain, eight, were discovered near a church in Alpine, Miss., on May 10, ending a two-week manhunt for Mayes, their 35-year-old captor.
Mayes shot himself in the head as authorities approached his location nearby and died soon after, but his body has still not been released by officials in Mississippi.
Mayes and his captives were discovered five days after the bodies of the girls' mother and older sister -- Jo Ann Bain, 31, and Adrienne, 14 -- were found just eight miles away, where the fugitive mechanic had hidden them at his home in Guntown, Tenn.
Mark Golding, the medical examiner in Union County, Miss., told WMC-TV over the weekend that no one from Mayes' family had accepted the body.
"We've had some unusual cases but none like this where the family won't even accept the remains," Golding said.
"I do realize it's a terrible thing that has went on but someone is going to have to step up to the plate and eventually do something with him."
Mayes' wife Teresa is in custody after having been charged with the murders of Jo Ann and Adrienne Bain, while his 65-year-old mother Mary Mayes is also detained on kidnapping charges.
His brother does not want to accept the body, Golding told WMC-TV, adding that if it went unclaimed, the county would have to pay $900 to cremate the body itself. The body is currently stored at the state crime lap in Jackson, Miss.
The girls were reunited with their father after initial medical treatment following the end of the hunt. Details of their ordeal remain unknown.
