A 2-year-old Virginia girl who choked on a popcorn kernel in May has been on life support ever since. Now the family of Mirranda Grace Lawson is battling in the courts against a hospital that wants doctors conduct a brain death test on the toddler.
Doctors with the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System say they're certain Mirranda won't recover. They want to perform the test they believe will confirm she's brain dead.
But Lawson's parents have refused, saying they worry it will harm her. They believe she'll open her eyes again one day.
The Richmond Circuit Court ruled against the Lawsons last month, but the family is appealing to the Virginia Supreme Court.
