    California Wildfires Burn With Full Force

    Cooler temperatures and calmer winds helped firefighters in their battle against the most destructive of two big wildfires that have burned homes and forced hundreds of people to evacuate mountain communities on the edge of the Mojave Desert and in the southern Sierra Nevada.

    July 30: A DC-10 jumbo jet tanker carrying 12,000-gallon loads drops swaths of fire retardant on top of the crest of Hauser Peak to protect microwave towers in Palmdale, Calif, on Friday. Aircraft and hundreds of firefighters are concentrating on protecting the densely populated Palmdale area a few miles away and a cluster of power transmission lines that provide electricity to much of Southern California. California Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority fire crews help with the fire.
