Someone stole a large tractor from a Salt Lake City construction site and apparently parked it briefly in front of a suburban home.
Officials said the Komatsu PT250-5 front-end loader valued at $130,000 disappeared from West Haven between 6 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Lane Findlay said Wednesday that officials don't know how such a large piece of construction equipment could be stolen without the keys and, apparently, driven on public roads without much notice.
"This one is a little more unusual because it's such a big piece of machinery," Findlay said.
The machine is typically used to move dirt or debris.
The sheriff's office posted a missing vehicle alert on its Facebook page Tuesday and a tipster reported seeing it in the driveway of a residential home in Ogden.
The tipster also shared a photo with police of the scene along a shady street. The yellow tractor's large scoop is on the front and the vehicle stands nearly as tall as the neat row of houses.
Detectives who went to the reported location about three or four miles from the job site found it was no longer there and are now seeking the public's help in locating the stolen tractor.
"I don't know how someone keeps that in their garage or their house," Findlay said.
