ALBANY, N.Y. – The Barnes & Noble bookstore chain will pay $10,000 to promote breastfeeding after a woman was asked to cover up while nursing her infant son at a Rockland County store.
The announcement comes after New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's civil rights office opened an investigation into the March incident after the woman said she was asked to either cover up or leave.
Schneiderman says a 20-year-old state law allows a mother to breastfeed wherever she has a right to be, and doesn't require her to cover up.
Barnes & Noble agreed to pay the money to Rockland County's Breastfeeding Promotion and Support Program. The company also plans to remind its employees about the rights of breastfeeding mothers.
