Baltimore will pay a $9 million settlement to a man who spent 20 years in prison for a wrongful murder and rape conviction built on allegedly hidden evidence that possibly could have cleared him.
The multimillion dollar settlement was approved Wednesday by the city's spending board. Local news outlets say it's the city's largest payout ever for a case involving alleged police misconduct.
In a statement via his lawyers, James Owens said "no amount of money can make up for the years" he lost.
Defense lawyer Charles Curlett says the settlement concludes a period of "prolonged litigation and uncertainty" for Owens, who was cleared by DNA evidence a decade ago.
The case involved members of Baltimore's 1980s-era squad of detectives who were the basis of a TV crime drama.
