A U.S. Army infantryman has been sentenced to 26 years' confinement and a dishonorable discharge for the shooting death of a fellow soldier while they were guarding a Patriot missile site in Jordan.
Spc. Jeffery Page, 24, of Perrysburg, Ohio, was sentenced Thursday in the slaying of 19-year-old Spc. Adrian Perkins of Pine Valley, California, on May 15, 2014.
Page was convicted Wednesday at Fort Carson, where he and Perkins were based as members of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team.
Perkins was shot in the head while bringing lunch to Page and another soldier at the guard post at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Azraq, Jordan. Perkins joined the Army in August 2012 and was on his first deployment.
Prosecutors argued Page disliked Perkins because he considered him to have lackluster soldier skills. Page's defense argued he didn't know his M-4 rifle was loaded when he pulled the trigger, the Gazette of Colorado Springs reported.
Judge Col. Douglas Watkins handed down the sentence. Prosecutors sought a life sentence, while the defense asked for a 30-year term.
Page apologized in court Thursday, saying, "I let my unit down. I let my squad mates down."
