A judge has ruled that testimony comparing a bite mark found on the body of a New York murder victim with the teeth of the man charged with killing her will be allowed at his jury trial.
Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Maxwell Wiley's decision follows lengthy testimony from both sides of a raging national debate about the validity of bite mark analysis.
Detractors of bite mark analysis had hoped the judge would offer the first step in banishing such analysis from courtrooms nationwide.
The Associated Press reported in June that since 2000, at least 24 men who were convicted or charged with murder or rape based on bite marks on victims have been exonerated. Many of them spent more than a decade in prison, including time on death row.
