In the first years after Fidel Castro's 1959 revolution, Cuban exiles in Miami and around the world began a toast to their homeland.
"Next year in Cuba!" they proclaimed at Christmas and New Year's eves celebrations.
The toast was a wish they anxiously waited to fulfill, and many believed it was only a matter of time before the revolution would blow over and they could return home.
As another year approaches, some Cuban exiles will still toast to return to a land they last saw decades ago. But as new generations continue to build their lives in the United States, and recent arrival frequently return to Cuba to visit relatives, the toast has increasingly become a vestige of the past.
