An aircraft carrier strike group has returned home to Norfolk after eight months supporting the battle against Islamic State forces in Iraq and Syria.
More than 6,000 sailors disembarked Wednesday from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and supporting ships. Some aircraft had already returned earlier in the week.
A stream of white uniforms flowed into a crowd of about 10,000 people, including dozens of service members who met children born during their deployment.
The Navy had extended the carrier group's time at sea by about a month with orders to sail from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea, where it continued to hit ISIL targets. The Navy says this helped allies reclaim significant territory from the militants.
