  • Mining Story 3
In the middle of California's Mojave Desert about an hour outside of the Las Vegas strip, business is booming -- literally -- as detonations reveal the lifeblood of America's technical security. Molycorp has begun mining again at its Mountain Pass facility after about a decade of inactivity, extracting valuable and concentrated ore that holds 15 rare earth elements, used in everything from cell phones to U.S. missile systems.  Read more >>

  • Mining Drill
Officials at Sutter Gold Mine say techniques used today are cleaner than ever, with little connection to some of the harsh ways gold was extracted from rock in the past. One miner, who is fifth generation from these parts, says locals are excited about 100 new well-paying jobs and that because most will be filled by locals, keeping everything clean is personal. • Abandoned California Gold Mine
Along California's picturesque Highway 49, aptly named for the famed miners of a time passed, most action these days involves tourists intent on finding the next great taste of wine, or hunting down a hidden gem in a local antique store.Nestled in the foot hills of the towering Sierra, towns like Sutter Creek, Amador City and Angels Camp evoke a romantic past, with the only gold mining here now just a few people with pans. But for the first time since the 1950's, California's Mother Lode will have more than just a tourist draw, as an operating underground gold mine is set to open. Read More >>

  • Mining Story 2
As prices of gold soar around the world, and even here on the left coast, mining begins to move forward. Sutter Gold Mine says it will be fully operational within 6 months and should pour its first gold bar within a year. Conservative estimates have the company believing it will pull at least 1,800 ounces of gold out of the ground each month, and that it is more than cost effective to reopen this mine, which has in parts been operational since before California was accepted into the Union. Environmentalists like Dan Jacobson aren't so pleased with the prospect of miners back in the Mother Lode. He says new “gold” can be found in new, cleaner industries like eco-tourism. He says the area in recent years has drawn thousands of tourists for its hiking, biking, clean rivers and green way of life and all that will be threatened. Why go back to an era that did so much damage, he insists. Read more >>

  • Las Vegas Fire Department
More than 40-million people visit the Las Vegas Strip every year and 90% of those people stay in high rises that stretch in some cases more than 60 stories into the sky. So it may not be hard to believe that the Fire Station that covers the strip is the busiest in the world and has the task of fighting fires hundreds of feet above the casinos and stores that draw-in millions from around the globe. We first got word of special high-rise training in Las Vegas through a close friend of mine Captain Rian Glassford of Clark County Fire. The process and planning began months ago and throughout this month, two times a day on drill days, about 90 firefighters responded to the nearly completed Foutainebleau Hotel for a mock fire on the 32nd floor. Our crew has covered tons of fires and been through significant fire training, but this opportunity to see men and women train in such a unique way was impossible to pass up….so, we suited up and headed in right along side them. Aboard the USCG Cutter Waesche we are more than impressed. At this time of the morning, the fog envelopes San Francisco to the point that we can’t see Alcatraz, or even a slight glimpse of the city, as the 418 foot long ship gently slices through the bay waters….this is by far the largest ship of its kind in the fleet. • Coast Guard 3
We are getting this tour as the Coast Guard touts its impressive new weapon. I have been on a ton of ships during my time at Fox and have seen some impressive improvements, but this one, the USCGS Waesche, may be my favorite. At 50 feet wide compared to the 30 foot wide cutters of old, the ship now has a huge 4000 sq ft flight deck and not one, but two helicopter hangers with a completely automated landing system. There is also a fully automated fire suppression system, including 1800 psi water cannons designed to push a burning chopper hulk off the deck in case of catastrophic magnesium fire. Read more >>

This advancement means the USCG is now even more capable of executing the most challenging maritime security missions including supporting the mission requirements of the joint U.S. combatant commanders. This new design will provide better sea keeping and higher sustained speeds, greater endurance and range, and the ability for launch and recovery, in higher sea conditions. There’s improved small boats, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles – all key attributes in enabling the Coast Guard to implement increased security responsibilities. Read more >>
