A 101-year-old pedophile who was New York's oldest state prison inmate has died.

Corrections officials say Theodore Sypnier (SIP'-nee-ay) of Buffalo died of natural causes at 12:23 a.m. Tuesday.

The Buffalo News reports Sypnier was taken to the regional medical unit of a Hudson Valley prison when his health began to fail last week. He'd been housed at Groveland Correctional Facility in western New York.

Authorities say Sypnier molested children as young as 4 years old for decades in Buffalo and later in the Town of Tonawanda (tahn-uh-WAHN'-duh). He was released from prison in 2008 after serving time on a 1999 conviction for molesting two young sisters but was returned in April after violating his parole by skipping sex offender classes.

He would have been eligible for parole in January 2012.
