The Washington Monument will reopen Friday after being closed for nearly a week because of problems with its elevator.
The National Park Service announced Tuesday that the monument will reopen after a damaged bearing on the elevator is replaced. That’s what led the monument to be closed Saturday.
Park service spokesman Mike Litterst said in a statement that some other work is being done during the closure. He says that maintenance should make the elevator more reliable.
The monument has been closed several times over the past year because of elevator breakdowns.
