Do you want to know the secret to living a longer life? Quit moaning and start smiling.
I'm trivializing things a bit here, but a series of fascinating studies reported in today's New York Times confirms what some of us might have long suspected: The more positive you are, the more years you get.
In one such sampling, those who viewed aging as a positive experience lived seven and a half years longer than those who did not think it a positive experience.
It seems pessimists had a risk of death for any given year 19 percent greater than average.
We could oversimplify here and say, you are what you feel. But try telling that to someone suffering from some deadly or serious disease. All the good thoughts in the world aren't going to make those ailments go away.
Yet even there, patients with a good attitude lived longer than those with a bad one. Not all the time, but enough of the time to make you stop and take notice.
I guess it shouldn't be too surprising. We tend to prefer being around people who make us smile or laugh or just chuckle.
It only seems fitting those same people get rewarded for their efforts.
