Some of Australia's best young cyclists found themselves hurtling through the air, just inches from serious injury or death, during a racing event Wednesday in Melbourne.

One of the riders, 17-year-old Jamie Crass, nearly flew off the track and came within inches of plunging down a nearby stairwell.

"We were into the bell lap coming down the back straight and a couple of riders in front of me collided," Crass said. "I was just in behind and I had nowhere to go ... riders falling down in front of me with no chance to veer away or anything. I just went into the back of one and cartwheeled over. ... I was very lucky."
