His rep said he is resting and looking forward to returning to work as soon as he is well. Taping of the show is on hold until he recovers.
The surgery reportedly went well.
"The surgery was a success," Kimmel's publicist, Lewis Kay, said in an e-mail Thursday. "The rest of this week's tapings of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' have been canceled until he is back on his feet. He is resting comfortably and is looking forward to getting back to work."
The 39-year-old comedian, who dates actress-comic Sarah Silverman, has hosted the late-night talk show for four years.
