A Massachusetts man is recovering after slashing his own throat upon hearing his conviction of assaulting a child.

Donald Gibson pulled a sharp object from his pocket and cut himself while a court clerk read the verdict Friday. Prosecutor James Orenstein says officers knocked Gibson to the ground and disarmed him.

The 39-year-old man was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

The Hampden County Sheriff's Office says the object was a piece of battery casing about the size of a quarter.

Gibson was convicted of indecent assault and battery on an 11-year-old. He was acquitted of a third count.
