Substance That Sickened New Jersey Elementary School Teacher Not Hazardous

A teacher was sickened and her class quarantined after she had a reaction to a white powder in an envelope, which was later found not to be hazardous, authorities said.
The other 425 students at Garfield East Elementary School were evacuated and taken to nearby Country Club Middle School after the incident, which happened about 10:40 a.m., 911 supervisor Carol Holland said.
The Burlington County hazardous materials team tested the powder and determined it was not anthrax or any hazardous substance, said David Wyche, spokesman for the Burlington County Board of Freeholders.
The identity of the powder, however, was not immediately known.
The teacher, whose name was not released, was taken to Virtua Memorial Hospital in Burlington County, in Mount Holly. Her condition was not immediately available, hospital spokeswoman Jane Yepez said.
Yepez said that contrary to some reports, the hospital was not in quarantine.
Holland said a detective went to the hospital and spoke with the teacher, who reported some skin irritation on her hands and forearms.
"It came in a letter, in an envelope," she said.
The number of students being kept in the teacher's class was not immediately known, she said.
