A strange smell wafting through a high school in northwestern Indiana on Friday sent 47 students to area hospitals, CBS Chicago reported on its Web site.

Officials were investigating the cause of the odor at Hanover Central High School in Cedar Lake, roughly 40 miles southeast of Chicago.

Students were suffering from varying degrees of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and shortness of breath.

The school closed at 10:40 a.m. local time, according to the report. Parents were asked to pick their students up at a nearby elementary school.
