Search teams were waiting for a break in stormy weather Tuesday morning before heading up Mount Hood to look for two missing climbers.
The temperature at Timberline Lodge was around 10 degrees and snow was reported blowing sideways.
The men, described as experienced climbers, were due off the mountain Monday afternoon. They had not answered calls to a cell phone they are believed to have been carrying, said Detective Jim Strovink of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office.
They apparently did not take along the mountain locator units available at the lodge for climbers, Strovink said.
The vehicle the men took to the mountain remained at Timberline Lodge, a resort on the mountain's south slope. The lodge is at an elevation of about 6,000 feet on the 11,239-foot mountain.
Searchers included representatives of Portland Mountain Rescue, Mountain Wave, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, American Medical Response and the Portland-based 304th U.S. Air Force Rescue Squadron.
More than 35 climbers have died on Mount Hood in the past 25 years.
