"Heroes" actress Hayden Panettiere's father was arrested at the family's West Hollywood home Monday morning on a felony count of domestic violence involving Panettiere's mother, Sgt. Scott Wolf of the West Hollywood sheriff's office confirmed for

Earlier, Wolf told People magazine:

"There was a domestic argument between the mother and father. He got upset and struck the mother in the face one or two times on the left cheek which caused some bruising. From what I'm told, he hit her with a closed fist.

"The mother called police shortly before 3 a.m., and Mr. Panettiere was taken into custody," Wolf added. "He's been cooperative. Earlier, they were at a party and the husband apparently felt disrespected by his wife."

Wolf told People that Alan Panettiere, 49, was arrested on the felony charge instead of a misdemeanor because "there were visible signs of injury" on 52-year-old Lesley Vogel's face.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Panettiere remained jailed at a substation on suspicion of spousal assault, and was being held on $50,000 bail.

Whitmore declined to name the woman that Panettiere is accused of hitting, but said she reported to deputies that he struck the woman three times with an open hand.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that both Alan Panettiere and Lesley Vogel had been drinking prior to the alleged incident, and that Alan Panettiere told cops when they arrived, "I'm Alan. Yeah, I just got into an argument with my drunk wife."

On Sunday evening, Hayden hosted a benefit for the Whaleman Foundation at Eva Longoria's Beso restaurant in Hollywood, also attended by her parents.

Hayden's car, driven by boyfriend and "Heroes" co-star Milo Ventimiglia, ran over a photographer's foot outside Beso, according to TMZ.

Hayden Panettiere plays Claire Bennett on NBC's hit show, "Heroes."
