Sharper Image Corp., a specialty retailer of gadgets, said on Thursday that August sales at stores open at least a year declined by 32 percent from the same period a year earlier, due to the fall-off in popularity of the company's Razor scooters.

The previous year's same-store sales had increased 80 percent, boosted by the scooter fad.

August total store sales decreased 25 percent to $15.3 million from $20.3 million.

Total company sales, including catalog and Internet sales, decreased 23 percent in August to $24.6 million from $32.1 million in the prior year, which had represented a 90 percent increase over the year before.

Excluding scooter sales, total company sales increased 19 percent, and same-store sales gained 11 percent.
