NEIL CAVUTO, HOST: Close, very, very close — a decision is apparently imminent now, John McCain set to pick his running mate as early as tonight.
My next guest is getting a lot of buzz lately, conservatives now pushing to get her — that's right, her — on the ticket.
Kay Bailey Hutchison is a Republican senator from Texas.
Senator, very good to have you. Thank you for joining me.
SEN. KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON (R), TEXAS: You bet. Great to be with you.
• Video: Watch the interview with Kay Bailey Hutchison
CAVUTO: All right, now, the rule of thumb is, if you're talking to me, then you're not it.
You're talking to me. Are you not it?
HUTCHISON: That's correct. I have no airline reservations to Ohio. That is correct.

(LAUGHTER)
CAVUTO: All right.
That — now, that is sort of — I joke — but that's kind of the rule thumb, that if you're in the running or seriously being considered, you're kind of given a call, "Don't talk; don't talk."
Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, Senator, had canceled an interview with us. Should I read anything into that?
HUTCHISON: Well, of course, I think he is on everyone's short list. And you never can tell. He may be — they may be trying to hide the ball, as we say in law school, and I — I don't know.
My guess is, it's Mitt Romney, if I had to bet the ranch, but I don't know. And we will have to really just wait maybe a couple of hours.
CAVUTO: Let me ask you, Senator, your stock rose appreciably when we got news of all these disaffected, angry Hillary Clinton supporters, who felt that they were being treated and dismissed rather cavalierly by the Obama folks, and that it might be wise for Senator McCain to reach out to that community. And then along comes Kay Bailey Hutchison.
What did you make of that?
HUTCHISON: Well, I have said early on that I did not want to be considered for vice president. I really have other things in mind for my future.
But I do think that a woman on the ticket could have been something very exciting. I — I want to have a woman president or vice president. I want it to be the woman that has the right views, the same views that I do about the future of our country.
But, in the end, I think the presidential candidate has to pick someone with whom they're very comfortable, someone who could be president immediately, and someone who has the same view of what is right for America at this time.
And, so, I think he has some very good choices. And I do think that it's going to be someone that we will all be pleased to have as a vice president and potential president.
(CROSSTALK)
CAVUTO: Those — I'm sorry, Senator. Those couple of names I mentioned prior there, they seem like safe choices. The rap was that Senator McCain couldn't afford to be safe; Barack Obama could.
What do you make of that?
HUTCHISON: Well, I think that Barack Obama did go safe. He went with someone who has experience and someone who agrees with him on the issues.
And I think here's where you're going to see the differences that are going to be very clear. I think you're going to have four people at the top of the ticket, Republican and Democrat, who are good people, but their views on the issues and where America should go are completely opposite.
CAVUTO: OK.
HUTCHISON: On energy, which is affecting our economy, they're going to be so different. And Americans are going to have to have that choice and make that choice. And I think it's going to be a clear choice.
CAVUTO: Senator, thank you very much.
HUTCHISON: Thank you.
