The Senate Armed Services Committee (search) gets a classified briefing today on the status of several Pentagon investigations into prisoner abuse in Iraq.

The panel's chairman, Republican John Warner (search) of Virginia, also wants to hold another public hearing into the issue before Congress goes into recess at the end of the month.

The committee has held three public hearings with high-ranking Defense Department officials since the abuse scandal broke two and a half months ago. But the issue has been on the back burner for more than a month.

The scandal exploded after pictures emerged in the media of naked, hooded Iraqis being mistreated by American soldiers.

The committee will also be briefed on previous reports from the International Committee of the Red Cross about mistreatment of Iraqis.
