A Rapides Parish school bus driver was cited after police said he backed over a Peabody Magnet High School student, leaving the girl seriously injured. Police said the bus didn't have working backup lights or a reverse warning signal.

Zadora Armstrong, 14, was walking to school when the bus backed up and ran over her, police said.

The bus' driver, Earnest Scott Jr., 49, was cited for improper backing and unsafe vehicle.

Rapides Parish schools Superintendent Gary Jones said officials weren't aware of any equipment malfunctions and that the driver is required to do an inspection each day.

Armstrong was taken to Rapides Regional Medical Center with serious injuries to her leg and ankle.
