Few Americans think recall elections will become popular, and a majority says they would vote to keep their governor if a recall election were to be held in their state. In addition, more than twice as many think Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger (search) will do a good job governing California, as say he'll do a bad job.
Even given all the attention California's recent recall election received, most Americans (69 percent) think recalls will remain rare, with less than a quarter of the public (23 percent) saying they think they will become more common, according to the latest FOX News poll.
The national poll of registered voters, conducted October 14-15 by Opinion Dynamics Corporation, also finds that few Americans would oust their current governor if a recall were held in their state. Two-thirds say they would vote to keep their governor (including 65 percent of Democrats and 69 percent of Republicans), while 24 percent overall would vote to remove their governor from office.
"These figures show that while many states are facing the same kind of revenue and budget problems that California has, other governors have managed to keep more in touch with their people than Gray Davis (search) did," comments Opinion Dynamics President John Gorman. "Of course, the weirdness of the California election has also probably reduced the public's appetite for such things; who wants an assortment like the 133 California candidates campaigning in their state?"
Nearly half of voters (46 percent) think actor-turned-politician Schwarzenegger will do a good job governing, but Republicans are much more likely than Democrats to think so (57 percent compared to 39 percent). Nineteen percent of Americans think Schwarzenegger will do a bad job, nine percent say "mixed," and 26 percent are unsure.
Schwarzenegger has praised his wife Maria Shriver (search) for helping him win last week's California recall election. A plurality thinks Shriver is more of a "stand-by-your-man" type of wife than Hillary Clinton is, with 44 percent saying Shriver is more "stand-by" and 34 percent saying Clinton is. Another 11 percent say both equally, and two percent say neither.
Polling was conducted by telephone October 14-15, 2003 in the evenings. The sample is 900 registered voters nationwide with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.
