Rutgers University Suspends Sorority After Hazing Charge

Rutgers University suspended a campus sorority after some of its members were charged with hazing, reports.

Six members of the university's Sigma Gamma Rho sorority were arrested and charged with aggravated hazing, an indictable criminal offense.

Prospective sorority pledges were reportedly hit with paddles and denied food between January 18 and January 25, MyFoxNY reported.

The abuse took place at a student apartment building in New Brunswick, N.J., and at private homes in Newark and West Orange, authorities said.

One pledge received medical attention for injuries she sustained during the beatings, police said.

The six students are free on bail. They could face expulsion under Rutgers University's code of conduct, MyFoxNY reported.
