Ringo Starr says if George Harrison really were near death, he would have heard about it.

Starr told a news conference Tuesday outside Toronto that he saw Harrison three weeks ago, and that he was doing great. He says Harrison is recovering from his brain tumor operation and his spirits are high.

Starr says he heard the reports that Harrison was on death's door. But he says he thinks if anything was going to happen, he'd probably get a call.

Harrison has denied reports that he's close to death. Harrison was recently treated at a clinic in Switzerland for a brain tumor. He's also had a cancerous lump removed from his neck in 1997.

Starr held the news conference to kick off the tour with his latest All-Starr band.
