PHILADELPHIA – The retired aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy is almost back to Philadelphia.
The ship is headed up from Florida. It was built in Newport News, Va., in the 1960s and retired on March 23, 2007, after 38 years of active service. It was modernized at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in the mid-1990s, the last major project at the yard.
Officials say the ship is slated to dock in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. It was originally scheduled to arrive Friday but was delayed.
The carrier will remain mothballed in Philadelphia until the Navy decides whether to sell, scrap or use the ship for another purpose.
