An Independence couple accused in the videotaped sexual torture and killing of a woman face dozens of new charges leveled by a Jackson County grand jury indictment, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
Richard D. Davis, 42, and Dena D. Riley, 40, each had been charged in May with six felonies in the death of Marsha Spicer, 41, also of Independence. A fisherman found her body May 15 in a shallow grave in neighboring Lafayette County.
The Kansas City Star, citing a Jackson County Circuit Court database, said the grand jury has since indicted Davis on 40 felony counts and Riley on 26 counts.
Entries for Davis and Riley could not be found in the public database late Tuesday afternoon, however, and a spokesman for Jackson County Prosecutor Mike Sanders said he could not confirm the indictment's existence.
Spokesman Ken Evans said Sanders is expected to discuss the new developments Wednesday afternoon, following Davis' arraignment in circuit court in Independence.
Sanders' office initially charged Davis and Spicer with first-degree murder, rape, kidnapping, assault and sodomy.
It was not clear Tuesday if the new charges involve a second woman, Michelle Ricci, whose burned remains turned up in late May in a wooded area northeast of Kansas City near the Clay County town of Liberty. Davis and Riley had directed authorities to that body after their arrests in late May.
According to The Star, the new charges against Davis include forcible rape, sodomy, sexual abuse, felonious restraint and assault. Riley faces additional counts of sodomy, assault, felonious restraint and kidnapping, the newspaper said.
The newspaper said the new charges indicate that more than one person was a victim of Davis and Riley, although the database did not name them or detail the alleged crimes.
Police searching an Independence apartment shared by the couple turned up videotapes of Spicer being beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled.
Both Riley and Davis also have been indicted on a federal charge of kidnapping a 5-year-old southeast Kansas girl after they fled the Kansas City area and before they were captured in rural southwest Missouri on May 25.
Court documents said the child, identified as a relative of Davis, had suffered injuries consistent with sexual abuse.
