NEW YORK – From jeans to suits, the red carpet at the 20th Annual MTV Video Music Awards was a fashionista's dream -- or nightmare.
Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons (search) showed up Thursday night in a pink suit, as did Dre of Outkast. Rapper 50 Cent (search) wore a gray suit accessorized with a diamond necklace -- and actress Vivica A. Fox, in a flesh-baring short gray dress.
They were the subtle ones.
Christina Aguilera's dress was covered with pink feathers, while Mya (search) wore short, tight black patent leather and lace. Singer Tweet had on black and white over-the-knee leather boots and a dress made out of a T-shirt.
"I wanted it to be really simple and fun because it's MTV," Tweet said.
Tennis superstar sisters Venus and Serena Williams (search) may have missed the U.S. Open across town in Queens, but they were all over the red carpet. Serena was in a short black dress, while Venus sported a pink blouse and black mini-skirt.
They weren't the only non-musicians making an appearance. Basketball phenom LeBron James was in attendance, as was celebrity restaurant owner Rocco DiSpirito, and the cast of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy."
"It's incredible the variety (of people) that come to the award show," said Serena Williams. "Everybody watches MTV so everybody wants to come."
The fashion met with the approval of Jai Rodriguez, one of the fabulous five from "Queer Eye."
"I think it's all about representing who you are as a person," he said.
And of course, there was plenty of bling-bling, with diamonds and other sparklers adorning wrists, necks and fingers.
"Music connects with fashion, most of the artists are very fashion oriented," said rapper Fabolous, who had on two sparkling necklaces. "I think it goes hand in hand, fashion and music."
And it was also all about hanging with each other in this universe of celebrities, as meet and greets took place all over.
"This is cool, this is not the Grammys," said Chad Hugo of the producing duo The Neptunes. "This is the artists as real people, everybody hanging out, having a good time."
