Some public opinion, both nationally and in the congressional district of Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., and his interviews last week about Chandra Levy, the missing former federal intern.
NATIONAL
Three-fourths said they believe Condit is immoral and almost that many -- seven in 10 -- say he lied during his interview. (Gallup)
Two thirds of those who saw the interview said it made them more suspicious of Condit's actions concerning Chandra Levy's disappearance. (Gallup)
CONDIT'S DISTRICT
--Almost half in his district who had seen a Condit interview -- either nationally or locally -- said they had a less favorable impression of Condit afterward. Only 3 percent had a more favorable view and the rest remained the same. (Gallup)
--Residents of the district said by a 2-to-1 margin they would not vote for him for re-election, including half of those who voted for him last time. (Gallup)
--They were split on whether he should resign, and six of 10 said they approve of the job he is doing in Congress (RKM)
--By a 2-to-1 margin they thought Condit had nothing to do Levy's disappearance. (RKM)
The CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll of 814 people nationally taken Friday through Sunday has an error margin of 4 percentage points, larger for subgroups. CNN-USA Today-Gallup also polled 501 people from Condit's 18th district in California and that survey has an error margin of plus or minus 5 percentage points.
The RKM poll of 539 adults from the district was taken for The Modesto Beeon Friday and Saturday. It has an error margin of 4 percentage points.
