Sandra Mennino, who has a history of mental illness, reportedly could not handle the pressure of the break-up.

Her children, ages 10 and 12, were asleep when she crept into their room and allegedly started stabbing them with a kitchen knife, police said. Mennino then stabbed herself. Her 64-year-old mother also was injured when she tried to intervene.

By the time police arrived Mennino was being held by her mother in a corner, the knife no longer in her possession. The family of four was taken to Morton Hospital and released shortly after. All four were expected to recover.

In Tuesday's court hearing, Mennino was charged with "assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery on a child with substantial injury and three counts of assault and battery with a knife."
