A small plane carrying nine passengers has crashed near the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire.

Lieutenant Governor Glenn Thode says all passengers have been rescued and are being treated for minor injuries. He says the pilot is presumed dead.

Some of the passengers were Dutch tourists.

Thode says the plane left Curacao Thursday morning and was bound for Bonaire when the pilot informed the control tower that one of the engines had stopped working. He then said the plane was losing height and that he would have to execute a "controlled ditch."

The plane is operated by Curacao-based Divi Divi Air.
