Authorities say a southern Ohio teen died after he took an arrow to the chest while a friend was showing off a bow he had recently purchased.
Portsmouth Police Detective Lynn Brewer said the boy with the bow was inexperienced, and when he pulled it back Tuesday morning he either hit the quick release or it malfunctioned, and the arrow struck 17-year-old Storm Bratchett.
The high school senior was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, where he died.
Police aren’t identifying the other boy, also 17. But they said his uncle was present and warned him not to pull back the bow with an arrow in it.
Brewer said investigators are treating the death as accidental but still will present the evidence to prosecutors for their review.
