CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. – An Ohio man allegedly hired to kill two police officers in southern New Jersey was captured before he could carry out the killings.
Elvin D. Copson, who was charged with attempted murder, was being held Sunday on $1 million bail.
Cape May County prosecutors said the 41-year-old Toledo man, a commercial fisherman who formerly lived in New Jersey and has a criminal record there, was hired to kill the Middle Township officers so they could not testify at an upcoming trial.
However, they would not say who allegedly hired Copson or provide further details about the trial.
Copson was arrested in Middle Township on Thursday afternoon, but a weapon was not recovered. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
