It's believed a law being signed on Long Island makes Suffolk County the first municipality in the nation to ban the sale of drop-side baby cribs.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says he'll sign the local law on Tuesday. It bans the sale of any crib with a side that moves up and down. The law goes into effect in February.
Consumer advocates have complained for years about drop-side cribs. More than 5 million have been recalled over the past two years — recalls associated with the deaths of a dozen young children.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is considering new crib safety rules. A new, voluntary industry standard essentially eliminates the manufacture of drop-side cribs.
