LOS ANGELES – Nintendo of America's "New Super Mario Bros" grabbed the No. 1 spot on the U.S. video game sales chart in June for the second month in a row with 453,000 units sold, according to market research firm NPD Group.
The title, for the Nintendo DS portable player, is the latest version of the iconic game starring Italian plumber Mario and his brother Luigi.
Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.'s (TTWO) urban-action title "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories" for Sony Corp.'s (SNE) PlayStation 2 console debuted in the No. 2 spot, selling 400,000 units in June. The game was originally developed for Sony's PlayStation Portable.
Nintendo's "Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day" — another title for the Nintendo DS — targeted senior citizens and other nontraditional gamers and held steady in the third-place position.
The PS2 version of THQ Inc.'s (THQI) "Cars," the game based on the hit animated film from Walt Disney Co.'s (DIS) Pixar Animation Studios, finished fourth. THQ's "Cars" games for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance and GameCube console came in at No. 6 and No. 10, respectively.
NPD said last week that overall unit sales for THQ's "Cars" video game hit about 646,000 in June.
Rounding out the top five was Eidos Interactive's "Hitman: Blood Money" for Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Xbox 360. The PS2 version of the game, which is about an assassin called Agent 47, ranked ninth overall.
Video game sales rose 25 percent in June to $844.5 million, according to NPD, which measures nearly two-thirds of video game retail sales in the United States and makes projections on the remainder of the market.
