Navy Pilot Pulled From Ocean After Crash Off Virginia Coast

A Navy pilot was pulled safely from the water Thursday after his fighter jet went down in the Atlantic Ocean about 70 miles off Virginia, the military said.

The pilot, the only person aboard the F/A-18 jet, was rescued by the Coast Guard after he ejected around 4 p.m., said Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. David Nunnally.

He was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was being treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The Navy asked the Coast Guard for help after it lost contact with the jet off the North Carolina coast, said Coast Guard spokesman Christopher Evanson.

The fighter jet was part of the VFA-87 squadron known as the "Golden Warriors" based at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach.
